Apple’s New VR/AR Headset Launch Delay

If you love gadgets and always remain in touch with new technology then you might know that a very popular brand Apple Inc. were going to launch a new VR/AR headset by 2022. But do you know, that launch have been postponed and the launch may take place at the end of 2022 or in 2023. The delays are said to be due to problems with “Overheating, Cameras and Software”.

Apple is known for its various electronic devices and it always comes with innovative ideas. Dealing in several electronic goods, it’s become the routine of apple to go farther and give technology a new face. Their rumored mixed reality headset is the next big thing that won’t fit in your pocket or in your bag.

In November Apple’s analyst Ming Chi Kuo made a statement saying “Apple’s goal is to replace iPhone with AR in 10 years”. No doubt that company has a wide vision, but its current device is facing many problems, which creating a delay in its launch. According to Bloomberg, the company has postponed the headset’s release several times now. The company is working on two AR projects, one is augmented reality headset and one sleeker pair of augmented reality glasses that will release just after headset.

To define the problems that creating delay, lets discuss the structure of the mixed reality headset.

A design is what that captures the attention of buyers and apple always give its products a classic look. The first-generation Apple headset will be an

  • Oculus-style headset
  • With a knit mesh wrapped body
  • Weighing between 300-400 grams
  • Soft fabric body
  • Head mounted display unit
  • Several areas of adjustment
  • A comfortable pair of smart glasses

There are rumors that Apple will be using the “pancake” Lenses to keep the weight and bulk down.

Apple VR/AR Headset Processor

Reports suggest that the company’s upcoming mixed reality headset will use two chips/processor out of them one will be as powerful as M1 Pro chip on MacBook Pro that was launched in 2021 and the second chip/lower end processor will be responsible for sensor related computing. But company is facing problem with these chips as heating issues appear while using them in the headset. Previously, the Company was planning to use secondary device to offload the processing but the idea was dropped later.

Other features of the processor are:

  • Wi-Fi 6E support
  • 8GB RAM
  • 256 GB hard drive
  • 96W power adapter

The thermal demands of the chips are causing problem with heat dissipation.

As the name suggests, the upcoming headset will manage both augmented and virtual reality. It’s high resolution 8K screens which be using eye tracking technology, will be helping in handling Augmented and Virtual reality.

These display features will help the headset in providing better visuals. The dozen of cameras will help in tracking hand movements and showing video of the real world. The OLED panel will be used for Low-resolution peripheral vision.

Apple VR/AR Headset Applications

The mixed reality headset of the company will be able to handle VR applications because it’s a mixed reality headset. Well, it’s not known what applications the headset will bring but speculations are made that it will allow it’s users to use the headset for communication, content viewing and gaming. But you cannot use it as a replacement of real life.

There are rumors that company’s mixed reality headset will hit the high price. According to the report company is considering the price above $2000. Because it’s the first of its type, the prices obviously will go high as research have made on this. The device will cost several thousand dollars as it could be extremely expensive.

Development History

The virtual reality and augmented reality are not a very new term for the company. Apple has been working on it for a very long-time now. Their main belief in putting so much efforts in this research and having a huge team of employees for developing headworn AR/VR product is to replace iPhone in a decade time, knowing the fact that iPhone is the Apple’s most profitable product.

The earlier design of the device was too heavy as it included a fan and powerful processor which needed to be connected to an iPhone or Mac in order to process. But later the design was changed to use high end chips to headset itself.

The company is considering delaying the release until end of the 2022 or in 2023. Rumors about Apple’s AR/VR headset would come in June 2022 at WWDC.
